Skip Louis took gavel in hand and called our executive committee meeting to order at Pete Williamson's house in October. If you are ever yearning for a view of the Upper Valley, make arrangements to visit the Williamsons' house. Winning the award for coming from the greatest distance were Ben McAdams, who flew in from San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Harv Wilson, who came from Olympia, Wash. Pete Herman rolled out of bed in West Topsham, Vt., and made it to the meeting just in time. The hero of the meeting would have to be John Trimble. John is taking over the work of John Whiteley as our new head agent for the Alumni Fund big shoes to fill. John T. looked fit and eager to continue the first-rate work of John W Finally, Phil Wood came in for the weekend from Ada, Mich., so the Midwest was also represented.
Three actions were taken. We voted to continue supporting the visiting scholar-athlete program in the amount of $400. This program helps to underwrite the travel costs for accepted students to visit Hanover prior to their final decision. Sally Prescott was asked to look into other College programs and landscaping projects that the class might support. And at the prompting of Dan Plant, with a second from John Kavanagh, we voted to elect Ida McAuliffe an honorary member of the class. In putting forward her name, Dan wrote, "Our admiration and affection for Ma spans 37 years. Ida 'Ma' McAuliffe of Lebanon and The Red Door is a magnificent and unforgettable woman who, as Ma to hundreds of Dartmouth boys, offered home-cooked meals and a home-away-from-home when they were most needed and who, at 101, lives on with our gratitude and love." Welcome to the class of 1958, Ma. Finally, Skip noted that the 1993 fall mini-reunion is scheduled for the Harvard weekend, October 30-31. It's not too soon to get it on your 1993 calendar.
I was sad to learn that Dick Frisch was badly injured when hit by a van in Zurich, Switzerland. I am glad to report that he is on the mend after several weeks in the hospital. Hopefully, as you read this in February, he will be completely recovered and ready to greet any classmates traveling through Zurich.
Larry Weltin is in Adanta working in advertising. It may be that he, too, will be taking reservations for house guests during the 1996 Olympics. Look out, Larry, here we come.
Changing jobs is Gary Finerty, who has moved to the Digital Corporation. I believe that he will continue to be in the Boston area. In New Jersey, Frank Blatz has undertaken the responsibility of being the chairman of the board of trustees of the Community Colleges of Union County. With an enrollment of 20,000, and faced with the tightened education budgets of today, Frank has a tough job in addition to his 9-to-5 work.
Sulpician Father Howard Bleichner was installed in the fall as the 12th rector of the Theological College of Catholic University of America. Prior to this appointment he was the executive director for vocations and priestly formation at the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
