Whoever coined the phrase "fog of war" must have coached youth soccer. Coaching seven- and eight-year-olds is certainly char-acter-building for the kids and patience-testing for me. ("Remember, dear, they're not marines," says spouse/mother/team manager Lynda.)
But there are those magic moments: watching your child score his or her first goal, or, just as great, celebrating a goal scored by a child who has overcome leg operations and mild cerebral palsy. Some of you can't write your class secretary because what spare time you have is filled with coaching, driving to, or spectating at youth activities. When your season ends, share one of those thrill-of-victory or agonyof-defeat stories about your kids.

Architecture magazine recently profiled eight of the new generation of deans at schools of architecture. William McDonough, appointed dean of the University of Virginia School of Architecture in 1994, is described as a "green" architect who seeks to "overlay... architectural training with the imperatives of sustainable design."
Regarded as a proponent of a new "industrial ecology," Bill focuses his students not on appearance and form but on selection of materials, preservation of resources, and reduction of the impact of building on the earth.
Bill received his M.Arch. and M.F.A. at Yale in 1976. Between 1987 and 1994 he practiced architecture in his own firm with offices in New York City and in Charlottesville, Va. Bill lectured at various universities between 1990 and 1994 and was a guest critic at Yale during 1994.
When not occupied with the responsibilities of deaning, Bill teaches a foundation course titled "Environmental Choices," which he designed, along with another course, "Architecture as a Covenant with the Earth Again." Bill's clearly a Big Greener in the best sense of the words.
Speaking of green things, don't neglect to send Bob Barr the green postcard he mails us with each copy of his outstanding class newsletter.
All marines, especially this one, like to get mail. Bob Barr's cards are not a source for news for the Class Notes for this magazine, so do your patriotic duty by writing me too with news about you and our classmates. Don't tempt me to misuse the vast resources of our national security agencies to check up on you. A postcard from your summer-vacation spot would be nice. And take time to enjoy the summer. That's an order.
