George Colton (I should call him "Old Faithful") writes, "It's time I sent you a little more news from the southern part of New Hampshire. There are two'35s at River Mead. Paul Cummings and his wife, Jeanne, having moved in July 1. Ruth and I drove them up to Sutton, Vt., to share in the Mathers' wonderful picnic. We see a lot of each other, for example we jointly interviewed Walter Peterson '47 and wife Dorothy last night. Walt was governor of New Hampshire back in the '6os, and a director of River Mead. There's another'35 in Peterborough, but I haven't met him yet-Bob Lewis. He and Paul Cummings play golf together regularly. Ruth and I...have been back to Hanover often and enjoy seeing places and people that were part of the good life we led there for 50 years.... The trip back and forth is not difficult and often provides a chance to lunch in New London with Don and Margaret Badasch—and sometimes with Al and Jean Brush also.
Bill Mathers called with the sad news that William Dimity passed away. I'm assuming that our necrologist, Bob Hage, has received the obituary from the College records office (or at least I hope he has)—but if it does not appear in this issue, we'll see that it gets into the next one.
The Office of Alumni Records sent me an alumni death notice that JamesOughton passed away on June 11; again I'm assuming that Bob Hage is doing that obituary, but if it does not appear in this issue we'll have to get our act together and see that we don't overlap or that we don't omit any of these notifications.
I had a very interesting phone call a while ago from the daughter of the late Rem Ryder. We reminisced about his achievements on the golf course, and Bill Mathers had told me about their match in the finals of the College championship, which, as I remember it, Bill won on the eighteenth hole with an eagle against a birdie! I believe that they both could have made good pros on the tour.
Final note—The following is a message from Angus Russell (bequests and trusts office at the College). "I reported on Monday that Mrs. Ann Hopkins Spahr died recently. Info was from the Valley News. She was the only child of President Hopkins. If you put something in the Mag it would resonate with some of the alumni from the '30s. She was known on the campus and beyond for her beauty and liveliness."
