I don't know what the weather's been like in all the other parts of the world in which the class is dispersed, but here in New York, the summer's been extremely mild. Somehow, an August that passes without us wilting and fanning ourselves against 90-degree, breezeless humidity makes autumn seem like last year's fashions: Been there, done that. But I guess one thing the weather can't take away is the sense that this is the season to embark on new adventures in work, education, and lifestyle.
Jane Blum DeMarchi takes the prize for Biggest Work Adventure Crossing Many Time Zones. Jane and husband John bought a house last November in Ohio, where she worked for the state. Five months later, she was transferred to Hong Kong. The couple had to sell their house, cars, and furniture and John had to find a job. Miraculously, everything fell into place and she is now the managing director of the State of Ohio office of East and Southeast Asia, where she helps Ohio companies export products to HK, China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. John is a teacher at the Hong Kong International School. Last I heard, they are excited and happy and living without furniture.
Nancy Groth has begun her degree studies in veterinary medicine at Tufts this fall. Last October she married Brett Robichaud, a software engineer for Tally Systems, a software publisher in Lebanon, N.H. He is a native of West Lebanon, and the two met at Tally, where she was a product specialist. She writes in her e-mail that, sadly, the last six years of her life fit neatly onto one screen. Well, if it helps at all, many of us have similar laments. But we're not even 30 yet, so don't sweat it. In two years, we can all have a collective cry.
I have very exciting second-hand news about Michelle Turner Cordero. (Or at least exciting for those of us who read Entertainment Weekly and Premiere magazines religiously.) She has been accepted at the prestigious Old Globe Actor's Company in San Diego, which is well-known for its Shakespeare productions. But more importantly, she will also have a prominent role in an episode of NashBridges (the new Don Johnson/Cheech Marin TV series), which is filmed in San Francisco. She plays an undercover cop, and she gets to tumble on the ground with a macho revolver, get up, point, and shout, "Stop! Police! I've got a gun!"
The Middletown (NY) Times Herald Record announced that Jennifer Newton graduated from the University of Michigan Law School. No news on where Jennifer is headed, though. Scott Lush sent word that he entered an M.B.A. program at Georgetown University last August. He will also be continuing as senior analyst for the ARDAK Corp. in Washington, a management consulting firm for the aerospace and defense industry. Scott also asked me to share news with all of you about what I am up to. Gladly. I am a staff reporter at Money magazine. I make stock recommendations and write about compensation, benefits, and other workplace issues. I have been on a three-month quest for an apartment, which, if you read The New York Times, is an impossible thing to find right now unless you're willing to spend big, big bucks for a closet with a lovely view of a brick wall. I'm stubborn, though, and I'm determined to hold out for a walk-in closet, so at least I have some place to put a bed.
