Dartmouth men and their wives on Long Island turned out in large numbers for our spring dance, held March 25 at the Stewart Manor Country Club. Dan Denham '31 ran the affair, ably assisted by a strong committee of executive committee wives, headed by Dorothy Darby, wife of Walt Darby '39. The music was excellent, and comments bountiful as to the good cheer enjoyed by this large Dartmouth group.
By the time this edition of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE is distributed, our annual meeting scheduled for May 26 at Felice's restaurant will be history. We have invited the boys from Long Island who are accepted as members of Dartmouth's fall freshman class as our guests. Their mothers and fathers will also attend. We expect Tom O'Connell '50, Assistant to President Dickey, as speaker.
After our annual meeting, at which the new slate of officers will be presented for election, our only remaining affair will be the annual family beach party at Gilgo Beach, Saturday, June 25. The success of last year's affair needs no comment. Jack Coulson '39, who is handling matters again, assures us all arrangements have been completed, and a special man to do nothing but guarantee a continuing and adequate supply of ice, which turned out last year to be in very short supply. John GamlingJr. '51 promises to make mention on his network of the affair to his millions of listeners. We are hoping for an even bigger crowd than last year to what seems to be becoming a regular annual close-up-shop party.
On the weekend of May 6-7 the club secretary, Bud Hummel '42, attended the Dartmouth Alumni Officers meetings in Hanover. Friday night speakers to club secretaries included Al Dickerson, Eddie Chamberlain and Ellie Noyes, from the College, and Bill Bates '33 from the Alumni Council. Saturday night the group at large heard President Dickey, Sid Hayward and a member of the senior class. The club secretary left Hanover with the reassuring feeling that the College is moving forward on all fronts, is preparing for the future, and is graduating new Dartmouth men in almost the identical composition as the many older alumni who were in attendance.
