APRIL 1996 Mary Lougee Ripley,

Dick Black celebrated his 90th on January 16. Katie gave a party at Kendal. Both the Inn and Kendal Kaffee Klatches were well represented.

Dan Marx's son Dave called from California to tell us of his father's death, and we had a lovely visit across the miles. Since all mag obits are so short here are some highlights of his career. He became one of Dartmouth's outstanding teachers and chaired her international relations program. He won traveling fellowships from the University of California and Guggenheim. With his years of experience in the shipping business he became chief of vessel utilization for the War Shipping Administration. In 1949 he helped implement the Marshall Plan as an assistant to Ambassador Averill Harriman in Paris.

He was a member of the delegation for developing trade in Europe at Geneva, Switzerland, a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, a staff member of President Eisenhower's Council of Economic Advisors, a senior economist at the Stanford Research Institute, and a consultant to the Export-Import Bank, and there's more!

His obit lists membership in Dartmouth Clubs and asks that memorial gifts be sent to Dartmouth. Dan was a beloved teacher at Tuck School and a warm friend to talk with in later years. Our sympathy goes to his family.

Rip's item for the month: We used to drive up to the dump And drop our refuse in a lump, But now it must be classified And sorted 'til we're glassy-eyed. With all that old convenience lost, Is all this nuisance worth the cost?
