Frederick Hall Professor of Mineralogy, Emeritus

IN GEOLOGICAL TERMS the six-decade volcanology career of Richard Stoiber '32 has been but a fleeting moment. But in academic terms, his years leading classes and field trips rival the transformative power of the mightiest of volcanoes. He inspired more than his share of students— "Stoiber's Boys"—to take up earth sciences professionally. As Samuel Adams '59 put it, "If he'd been carving frogs, we'd all be biologists or doctors." Stoiber's 1976 retirement added the word emeritus to his title but didn't stop his teaching or volcano chasing. Today the entire world can access Stoiber's molten core through his Electronic Volcano homepage: .

Whether on Kilauea or online, volcano stalker Richard Stoiber fires up earth scientists.
