It's August in Manhattan as I write this, and it's warming up quite nicely. The U.S. Open starts today, and I'm a little angry about my seeding. Went out there yesterday to watch them practice. Wow, they're good. God, I'm old.

Ran into Nancy Green Oey on the street. She stared me down for a moment and then gave me one of those "Are you Stephen Godchaux?" I denied it, but she persisted. She was kind enough to e-mail with news of her summer reunion on the Cape with '81 types. Holly Eaton is an attorney, a certified carpenter, and performs good deeds for Habitat for Humanity (Jimmy Carter's foundation?). If there's a Jesus joke here, I'm not the one to make it. The other multi-talented Holly '81 was there. Holly Dustin is a partner in a prestigious law firm in Connecticut. KirkRead came with his family in tow. The Reads are all headed to France for the fall semester. Kirk is a tenured professor of romance languages in Maine. StewartMahoney and his son made the trip from Philadelphia, where he, too, is a teacher and a happy teacher at that. Sally JohnsonSpadero, husband Paco, and children came up from Providence. According to Nancy, Sally works on "remarkable" projects for the state of Rhode Island. What, she's making it bigger? Sorry. Nancy and her husband, Fred, have relocated from L.A. to Manhattan. Fred is directing daytime television, I think.

Rob Daisley '80 sent me a nice note. Told me that Jim Degenhart lives in Tampa Bay with his wife and two kids, works in the trust department of Sun Trust Bank. I can see Jimmy D at the Ice Palace, the only true hockey fan in the state of Florida. Rob says that Bobby Dale is a real-estate lawyer in Philly. He and his wife, Brenda (?), have a passle of kids and live in Bobby's hometown, Cherry Hill. That's Jersey. The pretty part. Rob said that Bill Proom lives in Hanover and works in investment banking for a private firm there. Billy and his wife, Mary, also have a few kids, the youngest of which is already an accomplished stair-diver at the Boom-Boom Lodge.
