Wow. Reunion. It's funny how a short weekend can be so powerful. And it's funny how a weekend can (in a way) replicate four years of college. Friday night was like freshman year—I arrived excited and nervous. I wasn't sure how it would go, would I know anyone? What would it be like? The tent was already full of little groups. It took a few minutes of wandering but sure enough, I found a huddle of my own and suddenly felt like I belonged. But it got late and people drifted off to their rooms—it was like the end of freshman year when we all slipped back to our hometowns. We weren't sure who'd be on campus in the fall when we returned and who'd be off or on an LSA. Sophomore year then, at reunion, was the late-night activities. For me it was Bones Gates' basement. This time around, though, I was smart enough to not even try to play pong. Like sophomore year, though, there was an easy comfort. I had found my friends. Junior year, like Saturday morning after a late night, was abitfuzzy. There was ataste of the end in the air. Just knowing that we'd eventually have to leave added a deeper intensity to the day. And then, senior year—Saturday dinner. It was a party. But it was a party touched with the melancholy realization that after tonight it might be a long time before you see a lot of these folks again (fiveyears! too long!). So we ate and we drank and we talked and we linked arms and sang the alma mater along with the Aires and then drifted away to the dorms. Sunday morning brought a mad dash to make last connections before people returned rental cars and caught flights. It had the same frantic air of post-graduation milling about the Green. Before I knew what was happening, I was back at home, wondering how much had been a dream.
If you weren't there, we missed you. Next time? We all owe Munir Haddad, lan Haft and Tamar Gerber our thanks for their work as president, treasurer and head agent. The new officers are: Bobo Krakower, president; Anne Tisi, vice president; Sara (Fried) Ehrlich, treasurer; me as secretary; Jeff Middents, newsletter editor; and Dlaf Minge, Webmaster.
Melanie Bowen sent in a quick addendum to the news she was surprised to read about herself. "While in fact I did take maternity leave when our twins were born last year and do wish I could swing a little more vacation time, I am happily balancing two delightful 14-month-olds (Jacob and Dora) and a hectic professional schedule. I just left Discovery Communications (parent of the Discovery Channel) after launching their education division and holding various executive positions, ending as EVP planning, production and operations for the division, and will shortly be starting a new job as SVP and GM of revolution health.com My husband remains in the Foreign Service so we'll move back overseas again at some point, but right now we're enjoying Washington, D.C.
Lastly, a couple of notes from President Krakower: Walker White got married this past May (I don't have anymore details than that). J. Christopher Bell is getting married in the Bay Area on July 13 to longtime gal pal Janet Miller.
So keep the news rolling.
