Art Ruggles has put his Dartmouth education, a degree in psychology, to good use for the past 33 years as the headline attraction in Santa's Land in Putney, Vt. A retired air force colonel, he needed a job, and was drafted by a friend, who ran a toy store, to don a red suit as Santa. The subject of feature stories in the Sunday Rutland Herald and the Boston Sunday Globe, Art said, "I always wanted to be a stand-up comic; I ended up being a sit-down comedian."
He takes the role seriously and has a definite plan for his talks with the children, and has developed a system to maintain control in his kingdom. Art says, "I used to kid and say that I would do it as long as I could sit up. But now I've decided to do it until I get daffy in the head. A lot of my classmates and friends are long retired. They're also long in the ground. I'm still hanging on. They told me when I came, I had to stay until I got it right. I guess I'm pretty close."
An e-mail from Janet Nast reports on the Dartmouth trip to Tuscany. Our class was well represented with Barbara andBen Cardoza; Ellie Cook, widow of Gardner Cook; and Tom and JanetNast. Janet said, "The trip was well suited to retirees as we were located in a single hotel without relocating involved. Day trips to Tuscan sites acquainted us with the countryside."
Janet added that they have a new grandson for our manger. Congratulations to the grandparents, Tom and Janet.
With deep regret, we report the following deaths: Bibbs Bankart on November 25, Jim Luttrell on December 8, Art Falk on October 22, Bob Ewing on October 2, Norm Hosford on November 21, and Robert Green on November 21.
