Today a nostalgia item came into my possession-a picture of Tuckerman Ravine, Mt. Washington, HarvardDartmouth Slalom, April 1937. A number of skiers are watching a competitor cross the finish line with the headwall in the background. Were any classmates present on that occasion, either as racers or watchers? Write me if you have any information on the race. I will bring the picture to the mini-reunion.
Good news comes in many ways about our class. Lenny Harris was married last year to a widow, Miriam Lassiter. He is still practicing dentistry on Long Island and is looking forward to another '37 mini-reunion there.
On December 31 Polly McLane was married to David Lit in Plymouth, N.H., and is living in Washington, D.C. Polly is busy getting accustomed to a new home and a new city. Our congratulations to both Lenny and Polly and best wishes for many years of happiness.
A press release from The Albrecht Art Museum, St. Joseph, Missouri, reported that a painting by R. Hugh Uhlmann wins "Best of Show" at the museum's 17th Annual Membership Exhibit. His painting, entitled "Isolation," measuring 4 feet wide and 5 feet high, depicts a scene he viewed from an airplane. The vertical landscape features a blustery sky, a snow-covered slope, and a row of telephone poles. Pat says he just started painting in September and had a one-man show of twenty paintings, of which ten were sold. Bring some of your paintings to the minireunion in September, Hugh, and if Hal andMarlene Putnam do the same, we'll add another dimension to our gathering.
Grandpa Lem Bowen and Elizabeth were featured in a Daily Dartmouth photo with Carrie Heinonen '91 and Kelly Begg '93 at the Kappa Kappa Gamma Grandfather party. Lem says he and other grandpas give advice and counsel to the Kappas.
The good news continues. Chick Koop was named a director and chairman of the scientific advisory board of Biopure Corp., a closely held company developing extracts from cow's blood that can be used as blood substitutes in humans.
Bill Heroy's citation, given when he was presented the Geological Society of America Distinguished Service Award, reads in part as follows: "Bill Heroy has served the GSA in many different capacities, generously, unobtrusively, and with great distinction. Since 1989 he has been a Trustee of the GSA Foundation. The present financial strength of the Society is, in no small measure, a result of his unselfish service over a period of many years."
