A cold snap in the Northeast and a playoff game in the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field; it all brings back icy memories of Hanover. Another game, another time, warmer temps and you have Hanover in June. Less foreboding, in fact, good memories in fast-forward to dream, perchance to reune (with literary apologies).
No apologies, but Congrats to Hillary Prentice, a daughter of Shel and Barbara, who will be an 'Ol (now the thought of a class in a new century can send a shiver). Shel also reported Steve Arndt's daughter is a freshman this year. Jack Manning's wife had a baby boy, John Connor, in December. He will be known as the Terminator. While in the Vermont end of our class, Congrats also to Joe Fallon for winning the largest medical malpractice suit in Vermont history. Before Greg Yadley and his minions descend on Joe, he cautioned that Vermont is not like New York, Massaachusetts, or other high-end award states and he is splitting the fee. Joe said it's like our poker game, you feel good about winning a pot, even one you split, but the stakes are not going to make or break anyone. Which brings me to our recent poker game with the usual suspects —in addition to Joe, ChipCarstensen, Mike Sack, Jeff Smith '71, Paul Snellgrove '7l, Mike Bailin '66, and Barry Pritchard (Penn), Good times, small stakes.
With a paucity of other class info., how about a short digression on the mascot? The following was from a letter I wrote to the alumni mag a couple of years ago, published but buried among ads. Enough of the "Big Green," my vote goes for the moose. It's a natural for us; it is an inhabitant of our same North Woods (unlike the Princeton Tiger or the Columbia Lion). It is majestic and a fierce fighter. As for aspersions being cast as being dumb, our alma mater does have the line, "the granite of New Hampshire in their muscles and their brains" without lasting negative effects on students and alums.
Here's my top ten list for the moose: 10. No confusion over singular or plural.
9. Already a cartoon hero for children.
8. The Co-op already stocks a "Dartmoose."
7. Romantic animal (three years ago national attention was drawn to one in Vermont who was in love with a cow).
6. All great sports teams have a moose (i.e., Moose Johnston, Moose Skowron).
5. Potential corporate sponsorship tie-in (Moosehead beer).
4. Popular television and syndicated (Northern) exposure.
3. Athletic break-away cheer, "The moose is loose."
2. "Politically correct" are not words in moose-speak.
1. Perfect mascot costume for a student named Berkowitz.
Just think of the difference it would have made years ago to cheer for Moose Simms' crushing blocks and runs in the fall, the tenacious defense of Moose Dicovitsky on the hardcourt in the winter, and Moose Broberg mowing down opposing hitters in the spring.
Fewer shopping days until Reunion. Book now, it is already the last-minute rush.
