Some months my news sources seem to evaporate. Sounds unbelievable. I like to refer to our survey to bring to this column mention of classmates who in the past have escaped my "net," and that of Newsletter Editor EdGrady. I hope mention of different names, places, and activities will strike a chord with some readers out there, and be a point of mutual interest leading to Reunion in June. Or could it even lead to more immediate contact by an intrigued reader who wants to know more?

Carl Kaufitnan and Ruth live in Chadds Ford, Pa. I recall this place as having great historical significance, and a wonderful place to visit. Carl was in public school administration as a consultant on the state level of Delaware. He has authored several books on the subject. What caught my wonder was Carl's hobby, which is boat building. He has built ocean-rated craft, and has twice won the Annapolis to Bermuda Race, in his boat class, in a boat he built. This seems to me a master accomplishment. But Carl has moved on to another craft, that of luthier; he builds guitars and mandolins. He hopes to be with us at Reunion next June, and I for one will want to know more about the boatbuilding craft, and to see and hear a hand-crafted guitar. Something to look forward to, for myself.

Dwight Smith responded to our survey, enclosing a folder for the Conway Scenic Railroad. This is now a part of yesteryear, when it was great for a family outing, summer to fall. "We whistle through Mount Washington Valley"; and it all was conceived, started up, and operated as a business by Dwight. His initial experience was in both sales management and operations with the Boston and Maine Railroad, from 1947 to 1972. He and Gertrude raised five children, four of whom have a Dartmouth connection: Dwight E. '73, Eric '77, Laurel 'BO, and Martha, Tuck '89. In retirement now, they enjoy extensive travel, as well as volunteer work in church, Rotary, and community groups. And, guess what? Dwight's hobby is model railroading. Now here's a topic for discussion at our 50th Reunion. See you there, folks, it's June 6, 7, 8, 1997.

Word received from Bob Freelander in Worcester, Mass., tells us he also will be in Hanover for the 50th.

Bob Craig and Mary, are still living in Pittsburgh, after a business life with Bell of Pennsylvania. Bob has many new interests. He is enjoying being in a Community Theater Group. This exercises the mind, and he also does tennis and gardening. This can keep any of us in shape.

Ken Kelly writes that he and Gloria raised three children, and now boast five grands—possibly more by now. Ken has had a remarkable career in construction management for IBM and for Caldex Oil Cos., and has done this worldwide: Greece, Italy, England, Scotland, plus the United States. He mentions a vertical-assembly building at Cape Kennedy, but is most proud of having managed construction of a 52-floor office building in Chicago, and a 42-floor building in NYC. Ken indicates he'll definitely be with us all for the 50th Reunion. "We'll be there," he says.

Keep those update messages and quickie notes coming.
