I was happy to receive a good letter from Emilie D. Palmer (Mrs. Alton Palmer) of MountDora, Fla., reminiscing about A1. She writes that Al, who died in 1975, was "most unhappy about the addition of women in 1972," and adds that it is "probably a no-no to mention that today," in view of the "many women achievers" Dartmouth has gained. She notes that Al, who really graduated in 1921 (shortage of chapel credits), chose to be identified with 1920. Al and Emilie attended 25 th and 40th reunions, and greatly enjoyed A1's memory book, which covered events and had snapshots of many football players, including, of course, his own. Al hoped that their son would attend Dartmouth, but Al Jr. doubted that he could fill his father's "football shoes," and graduated from Stetson University. He is a weekly newspaper publisher "and very happy, about 17 miles from here."
About herself, Emilie writes that she and daughter Harriet have lived happily together since 1983. At 92-plus, and with limited eyesight, she still walks and swims "in season." Emilie concludes, "I thought those tidbits might interest you, if not necessarily the column." Believe me, dear Emilie, those "tidbits" bring life to a column, and I do so wish more of the '20 family would send some! Thank you so much!
Emilie also wonders how many 20s are left. I hope to be able to answer that after the April Class Officers' gathering, when a computer list of living members and "rclicts" will be issued.
