As the class prepares for its 70th Reunionjune 68, I share more memories of our four years at Dartmouth. Sept. 19, 1923: Delta Alpha "will take place Friday trom 7 a.m. until Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. All freshmen are to dress in freak costumes and wear their caps.' Sophomores in each dorm initiated the freshmen into this mysterious society. Freshmen had to obey whatever instructions they received, including doing push-ups, soapbox orations, and skits, singing solos, and saying prayers. The everpresent paddle was there to enforce the requests. Purpose: to teach freshmen humility and to promote fellowship by everyone getting to know everyone else HRHH in the dorm. The freshmen were to parade in costumes before the football game Saturday
Annual sophomore-freshmen tootball Rush: the freshmen lined up in front of Dartmouth Hall on the east side of the campus and the sophomores in front of the senior fence on the west side. The captain of the football team kicked the ball to the center of the campus and the rush was on.
The winning class would be the one which presented the football to a member of Paleopitus at the south end of the campus. After 20 minutes of mass turmoil the whistle blew, ending the rush. The football was being tightly held by a sophomore and a freshman. The rush was declared a tie.
Grid squad holds initial practices as Coach Jesse Hawley drilled 60 candidates. Loss of 19 lettermen made his task diffi cult. However, other than a loss to Cornell in the dedication of the stadium, his team won the rest of its games, ending the season with an 8-1 record. Coach Sid Hazelton reduced freshman squad to 120 candidates, cutting 46.
