It's springtime in Hanover. As we all remember, that means 10 more weeks of winter and two weeks of bad sledding. One classmate who used to enjoy the skiing that these long winters provide has gravitated to sunny California. Residing in a much better climate than I do, Vaughn Halyard is living in Santa Monica and has been working in the music and entertainment industry for many years. As you might recall, Vaughn was not only a great skier but a talented musician as well. He has been the recipient of two Grammy awards and one Oscar nomination for the co-production of musical pieces with Stevie Wonder.

Our appeal for volunteer information definitely struck a chord with many classmates. We continue to receive wonderful stories about various philanthropic efforts that fellow 'Bis are interested in. Peter Heyman is involved in numerous organizations in the Seattle area including the Seattle Social Investors Forum (SIF), which is a new-business incubator that serves non-profits (www.socialinvestorforum.org). An example of one non-profit they served is Fare Start, which trains homeless people in culinary arts and provides job placement in family-wage restaurant positions. He has been involved with SIF since its inception in 2000 and reports that they have recently won a Gates Foundation Grant for their work. Peter also volunteers for Bread of Life Mission, a non-profit that recycles the lives of men who have hit the very bottom, healing them of chemical dependencies and restoring their spiritual health. AND, in his spare time, Peter—following completion of five months of pastoral ministry training—has begun ministry work with inmates at the King County Jail.
