Will the class have its first governor? Those of us in the Northeast are following the ongoing political career of Carl McCall. Back in December he turned down overtures to join the Clinton Administration in its second term. The question now in many minds is, "Will Carl make a run for the governorship of New York in '98?" Keep tuned.

In the fall of 1954 more than a few of us entered Dartmouth intending to pursue a career in medicine. If my memory serves me correctly, more than 50 percent of our class, including myself, were planning such a career. While many of us found ourselves heading into different career paths, Alan Gazzaniga continued steadfastly. Indeed, for the past 30-plus years he has practiced orthopedic medicine. With all the recent discoveries about DNA, I think I finally know the secret. It has to be in the genes. A recent photo in The Sound and the Fury revealed that yet another Gazzaniga would be following in his father's footsteps. Son, Michael, graduated from the Dartmouth Medical School a year ago, joining three others in the family already practicing medicine.

The Bamboo New Republic, a small daily newspaper in south-central Wisconsin, had the services of Oliver Witte as interim editor-in-chief a year ago. As we march into our sixties, "interim" may well be a term which describes our endeavors. In a similar vein, Steve Dawkins noted that he and Jane were spending this past winter and spring in Key West while working parttime in Washington for a think tank preparing a study of the recent NATO operation in Bosnia.

As this June issue reaches you, the countdown to our 40th Reunion will begin in earnest. Be sure to mark your calendars and begin your planning for what promises to be our best reunion. Communicate to our reunion chairmen, John Armstrong, Roger Bruttomesso, Kit Cowperwaite, Frank Gould, and Lindley Hall, the kind of activities you would enjoy. Don't know about you but I find each day seeming shorter than the one which preceded it. June 1998 will be upon us in just a blink or two.
