In the course of gathering information for the 50th yearbook, more than one classmate ventured that his acquaintance with other classmates was mostly gained at reunions. Indeed, one looks at other Class Notes which are loaded with crazy nicknames and allusions to unusual shared on-campus experiences with real envy.

The rest of the story, however, is that our smallest class in modern Dartmouth history has distinguished itself in other ways that our neighbors will have great difficulty in matching.

In spite of the wet weather, our reunion events went off on schedule and were well-orchestrated by retiring president JohnHatheway and reunion chairman FranHummell and his many helpers. Money raisers Jim McLaughlin and Ken Young broke all kinds of records, far exceeding expectations of the College. Ellie and BobHuke returned from the printer with our 50th yearbook, under budget and on schedule. Sonny Drury charmed at the class luncheon, telling more of the wonderful anecdotes of campus and town with which he has graced these pages for the past 25 years.

Having proved we can be a unified class, we now have the challenge of keeping that bond of mutual interest alive. If one thing emerged from our gathering louder and stronger than any other, it was that our classmates are mature, interesting, and highly entertaining. The past 50 years have been productive as we have roamed the girdled earth in search of knowledge, adventure, and fulfillment.

In the columns ahead we hope to be able to disseminate some of the adventures you classmates are still enjoying at home, abroad, and with each other. No matter where you are and what you are doing, it is unique and deserves being shared. We hope that many of you will join the growing numbers at the fall mini-reunions for football, colors, and fellowship. There is

always a willing ear to hear about your latest golf, therapy, travel, or embarrassing "Senior Moment" experience. I'll be setting up a class database, so put me on the mailing list to let me know of address changes, when you get on e-mail, and telephone area code changes.

Proud papa Rollie Sontag sent word that daughter Deborah '78 was taking over as Jerusalem bureau chief for The NewYork Times in September. Rollie had last-minute conflicts that kept him away from reunion.

From Tahiti Lou Clarke advises that he's about to take Frolic and sail her on west through the Society Islands to Rarotonga, Tonga, and Fiji. He is optimistic about having found the ideal female shipmate (young, strong) to join the crew. He threatens to send a picture, taken with Bob Gordon '86 in Costa Rica, to prove his eternal youth.

Since you are the most important ingredient in this stew, your notes chef anxiously awaits your note, call, e-mail, fax, or knock on the door.
