As I write this, it is the last week in September. Sunshine and' balmy breezes bathe downtown Minneapolis. But alas, all is not well. The Sunday afternoon roar which normally emanates from the new downtown domed stadium, the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, lovingly called the Hump, is missing. The Cowboys did not come to town. The Vikings are idle. It is pro football strike time and the only sound in the dome is from the vacuum cleaners doing down and outs on the artificial turf. While Jimmy the Greek in desperation might put odds on the Kirby model, and others might bet that 60 minutes of vacuuming would be at least as exciting as recent Super Bowls, and Howard Cosell might instantly feel himself eminently qualified to pontificate upon this new sport, the rest of us can simply leave the tube off and enjoy the outdoors, tossing a few Joe Kapp bombs of our own.

As you can see, we are easing into this new column. Basically, it won't take long to cover this month's mail input: two wedding announcements, a miscellaneous note, Kevin Case's dues notice, and a very special offer to buy prime lakeshore property in Florida, sight unseen. To bolster this meager offering I shall resurrect a few items from the hopper and resort to the phone.

At Friends Academy in Locust Valley, N. Y., Jeff Cutts is running a very successful men's hockey program. Last season his squad won the Nassau County high school championship as well as the Long Island championship. Their season record was 24-10-3, including games against high school teams in Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden. Jeff was voted "Coach of the Year" by the Long Island Coaches Association last year.

From the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company comes word that Barbara Griebel Devereaux "has been appointed director of planning and administration, products and services, in the individual financial services division." She has been with the company since 1977. Barbara and her husband live in Canton, Conn.

Recently Jenifer McLean Cooke was appointed data base and alumni records manager in the Academy Resources office of Phillips Academy. Jenifer makes her home with her husband in Andover, Mass.

Ah yes, a few words from the realm of nuptial doings. Last March (this note arrived by snowshoe) Bernhard Hoffmann III was married to Susan Farley Schemel in Vero Beach, Fla. At the time of the wedding, Susan was an assistant treasurer with the Bankers Trust Company in New York, and Bernhard was at the Tuck School.

Last July Nicole Lewis married Jeffrey Morton Oakes, a graduate of Princeton. Nicole is the manager of the corporate paralegal department of the New York law firm of Davis Polk and Waddell, while Jeff is an associate in the same firm.

Robert Lawrence exchanged vows with Sarah Mott, a graduate of Sweet Briar College, this past September. In May Rob will graduate from the Georgetown Law Center, where he is on the International Law Review. Rob and Sarah are spending this year in Chevy Chase, Md.

A letter arrived from Tom Mayer announcing his engagement to Jerri Louise Sines, "an aspiring opera singer who graduated from Southern Methodist University two years ago and came to New York to pursue her career." The wedding will be held in Dallas and Richard Mark will be a groomsman. Among the Dartmouth folks who attended the engagement party in New York were Richard, Maura Harway, and Kevin Rover. Tom and Jerri plan to live in New York, where Tom is currently practicing law.

A call came in recently from G. Robert Overhiser, a denizen of Philadelphia. Being a recent graduate of the architecture school at the University of Pennsylvania, Bob asked if I had any houses I needed him to expertly design. Because I am at the end of the alphabet, I expect that most of you have already heard from him. While he deserves credit for his technique, his sales concept is not novel. The effort brought back memories of some of our classmates' endeavors in the insurance business a few years back. By the way, Bob and his wife Sharyl are themselves planning to buy a house rather than build one. Hiser also said he occasionally runs across Dr. Ian Frank around 19th and Walnut. The Czar is doing his residency at one of the U. of Penn. affiliated hospitals.

In an effort to uphold the promise to give all items a fair shot at being printed, I hereby acknowledge the receipt of a "letter" from Mark Madsen. I won't, however, disrupt the august nature of this periodical by reprinting its contents. Keep trying, Mark. If the return address on the envelope was nonfictional, Mark resides in Cambridge, Mass.

From a very reputable source comes word that Lon McClintock is living in Rutland, Vt., where he is employed in the Vermont Legal Aid Office. Lon graduated from Vermont Law School last May and has a Regii Fellowship enabling him to work in public service law. It is unknown as to whether or not he is still chasing rugby balls around the mountains of Vermont.

Andy Wallace and his wife Win live in St. Paul, just across the mighty Mississippi. Andy works in a marketing position for Economics Laboratory, a company he has been with since two weeks after graduation. Andy mentioned that he regularly sees Scott Petersen out here in the hinterlands.

It is dark now; the temperature has dropped to 45 degrees. There is indeed nothing left of this Indian summer day, nor of items to pass on to you. Thus I await two things-a deluge of news from you, and the onslaught of winter. Not necessarily in that order. Happy Thanksgiving.
