As noted in the last issue, Gil Shattuck ran tor the New Hampshire state legislature and the third time was the charm, as he picked up a seat for Hillsborough by a 53-to-47-percent landslide. We hope that one of his constituents will advise whether he comes through on his campaign promises to improve social services and keep taxes down.

The Class of 1948 Scholar-Athlete Awards went to Harrier David Burnham '06, a 3.67 GPA engineering major, and skier Alison Crocker '06, a 4.0 GPA physics/math major. Many of you may not know that the class has sponsored these awards for several years and we usually get a chance to meet these fine young people at the fall mini-reunion.

Still appearing regularly with the New Black Eagle Jazz Band is vocalist/pianist Bob Pillsbury. He's a charter member of this 34-year-old group that has appeared in jazz festivals all over the United States and western Europe. They recently highlighted a fundraiser for the Lebanon, New Hampshire, Arts & Crafts Association.

The two alumni-nominated trustees of the College won election handily, which makes three of them on that board to begin the new year. We are hopeful that this will signal a more responsive attitude by that group to students and alumni. It is good news, too, that the long-postponed new dormitories are going ahead on north campus. That need has been acute ever since the College went coed.

One of the less happy tasks of class secretary is writing obituaries. Recently I completed these for Abe Abrahamson, Jim FitzGerald, Ralph Helm, Norm Laird and Ted Tischler. We also lost Lloyd Krumm, Dave Miller and John Hatheway's Pat a short while ago. Our sympathy goes to their families, and I urge you to consider how fragile our tenure is when you make your decision whether or not to come and take another look at Hanover and your classmates at the end of September. It doesn't hurt that Buddy Teevens '79 is back at the helm of Dartmouth football and we get to see a game. Reunion: September 29 to October 1-see you there.
