What! Already?! Was it only four years ago that we met in rain-soaked Hanover for our 50th? Already plans are underway for our 55th next June. Prexy Sam Wilkinson has appointed Ray Richard to head a veteran group of planners—Bud Gedney, John Hatheway, Bob Huke, Pat McAllister, Bud Munson, Jim Schaefer and Lloyd Krumm—who are hard at work hammering out the details of a fine pow wow June 9-11, 2003. Put it on your calendar and keep a sharp lookout for the details that will be forthcoming.
Need to remind you, too, of the more imminent mini-reunion October 10-12. Great dinner on Thursday evening; fun, games and class meeting on Friday; football with Yale after a leisurely Saturday morning stroll around campus. Go home at your own pace after the game or on Sunday. Designed especially for those who don't like to rush—something that even the undergrads have trouble doing these days.
Of course, there are those who still revel in exercise, like John van Raalte, who carried through on his promise to take all his living close relatives to Whistler, British Columbia, for his 75th birthday for a ski vacation in February. Fifteen showed up, from ages 4 to 75, and the skiing was superb. Followed this up with a week of golf in Palm Desert in March. Played tennis in between. He even claimed that he shot his age on the golf course and that destroyed his credibility. To provide the time for this, he has moved his office into his home and eliminated four commuting hours each day.
So late smart: Margie and I recently discovered vacation rentals all over the place. We'd been renting condos on our annual visit to family in Hawaii but never tried it elsewhere before. Easter afternoon we flew to London and spent 10 days in a delightful flat at about half hotel rates and spent the savings on seven plays. We're scheduled to do another apartment rental in New York in early December—again with luxury accommodations at bargain rates. It's on the Internet if you take some time and patiently work through the offerings.
In the interest of conservation (and we are all deep into that, I know) if you are receiving the Alumni Magazine, glancing at these notes and throwing it into the trash, please take one of Dick Dahl's newsletter return cards and send it to him saying that DAM no longer interests you. The class can save about $15 a year there by and it will mean that fewer trees need to be sacrificed. You'll get all the news you need from the newsletter. If you don't read far enough to get this conservation invitation, shame on you!
Have a pleasant summer. We'll look in on you again in September.
