Your class officers enjoyed a productive luncheon meeting recently at the beautiful summer home of Sue and Bill Webster in Old Saybrook, Conn. Those in attendance included Hank Amon, Ted Atkinson, Bob Blake, Carl Boe, President Jim Griffiths, Roger Hanson, Brian Porzak, Joel Sternman, Bill, Allen Zern, and me. Ted, Bill, and'Allen had enjoyed a round of golf in the morning reporting some very impressive scores. They would not admit, however, to die length of the "gimmie" puts they obviously had agreed to in advance! Our meeting and lunch included a lot of laughs and, believe it or not, some worthwhile business, all effectively presided over by President Jim.
Noteworthy among the various reports was head agent Hank Amon's update on the class participation in this year's Alumni Fund. Our class goal for 1998 was a very ambitious $245,000, and at the meeting Hank reported that we have a shot at making it with only four days left and the usual last-minute push. Those of you who have worked at fund raising know it is a very difficult job. Hank and his agents deserve genuine congratulations from all of us for a job well done, and our class should be very proud of its performance.
In the absence of Steve Waterhouse, Jim Griffiths reported on the various special projects our class is sponsoring. Again, we as a class should be very proud of the breadth and depth of our commitment to the College. Our contribution to the Webster Hall Project includes the 1965 Study Room East, the 1965 Study Room West, and the 1965 Presidential Portrait Gallery. As many of you know, Steve has led the effort to raise the very substantial funding required for these projects. Although this effort is nearing completion, Steve reports that there is still room for a few members of the class to participate. Additionally, plans are moving forward rapidly on the so-called "knuckle" project the previously described mini park and fountain to be constructed at the location of the former entrance to the now demolished Hitchcock Hospital on the new north campus. Our long-term on going commitments to other projects, including Native American Indians, Freshman Trip, and Friends of Baker Library, continue.
As many of you know, classmate WardHindman has put considerable effort into the creation of a class Webpage. The website is up and running, but like your secretary, Ward needs material. The class is strongly encouraged to submit news to Ward—phone (817) 567-0991 (h) or (817) 336-7411 (w), fax (817) 336-7874, or e-mail . Where the news is suitable for this column, I would be most grateful if you would copy me.
Our mini-reunion, under the able direction of Bob and Sharon Blake, is scheduled for the Yale weekend, October 16-18, and for our next out-of-Hanover reunion, we are considering Bermuda in May of 1999. Stay tuned for further details.
Finally, I must close on a sad note by relating news of the passing of classmate Edward John Higgins on May 2, 1998. The class extends profound sympathy to his wife, Eilen, and six children Christopher, Frances, Patrick, James, and Mary. A full obituary will be provided in an upcoming issue.
