I just received a great article written by David H. Oberlander '55, who thought '27 would be interested. Unfortunately, because of space limitations, it had to be shortened. We all thank him for his thoughtfulness. '"The recent news about the fire on Carnival Cruise Line Ecstasy near Miami Beach brought back images of the Morrow Casde inferno oft the beaches of Mew Jersey in 1934 when, ironically, I had just completed the research about Abraham 'Butch' Cohen and his bride, Harriet, who survived the deadh" fire, for my article 'Memories of the 1934 Morrow Casde Disaster: Honeymooners Swim to Safety.' Before dawn's light on September 5, 1934. Abraham and Harriet Cohen, a honeymooning couple from Connecticut, leapt 40 feet from the deck of the blazing A Morrow Casde and swam four miles for over six hours to reach the beach near Pt. Pleasant, N.J. During those early hours one of the nation's worst marine disasters claimed 135 lives. I was drawn to this remarkable story of courage and determination after learning that Abraham "Butch" Cohen played football with my father, Andrew J. 'Swede' Oberlander '26, on the great Dartmouth 1925 undefeated national championship team." Last summer Harriet Cohen celebrated her 85th birthday. Later she joined friends for a beautiful Alaskan coastal cruise. Waiting for the ship's departure, Harriet asked another passenger, "Is this your first time on this ship?" Her friend quickly replied, "Oh yes, we had planned to go on this one last rime, but they had a fire aboard." Sadly, I must report the deaths of Warren B. Smith on August 17, 1998, and Robert C. Hazelton on Alay 27, 1998
