At the September class/club officers conclave in Hanover, '48 received the Alumni Fund Committee Award for "Best All-Around Achievement" and President John Hatheway was named Class President of the Year. What a great way to cap off our 50th Reunion year and recognize a great effort. Thanks to all of us who made it possible with work and contributions. Reunion Aftermath: The final number of our record-breaking 50-year gift to the college is $1,069,514, with 81 percent of the class participating. This substantially exceeds our larger class neighbors. Thanks again to Jim McLaughlin, Ken Young, and all the others who labored hard to exceed all goals.

The handsome young man with Shant Chebookjian was son Rich '75, who was the last male to matriculate in the last all-male Dartmouth class. Carl Falsenfeld enjoyed himself so much he's promised to come back for the October mini-reunion and bring the wife. Natalie Palmunen Smith had a heart attack on the way to reunion but has recovered nicely. In the press: From the Worcester (Mass.) Telegram Gazette came word that Paul Campbell and Boston Celtics great Bob Cousy had renewed their rivalry in Florida early this year but on the tennis court. Paul was signed by the Celtics out of Dartmouth and played two years for their Hartford, Conn., farm team. Cousy was on the 1950 NCAA winning Holy Cross team, which in 1949 lost 50-44 to a Dartmouth team (including then-'48 Ed Leede) in Memorial Gymnasium. A New York Times article about the used-bookstore concentration in Northwestern Massachusetts led off with Bob Merriam's emporium in Conway (just six miles off 1-91), which features American history and culture. Bob was one of the finest athletes ever to attend Dartmouth, with Ail-American status in both lacrosse and soccer. He followed this with many years at his Deerfield Academy as a key staff member. Bob and Mary also have a bed and breakfast (413/369-4052). His own creative works were a part of the 50th Reunion Collection of '48 Authors in Baker Library. E-mail is a wonderfully inexpensive way to communicate with classmates as well as children and colleagues. Be sure to take advantage of the Dartmouth VOX Alumni Network program if you are plugged into email or intend to be. It is a no-cost, permanent e-mail address opportunity which will keep you in touch no matter how you change servers. To get started go to and it will walk you through registration. If you go to he can e-mail to you detailed instructions. Once you are on, let me or Pete Foster know. Our class e-mail page is located at under alumni. We are the oldest Dartmouth class to have one. Pete keeps it up to date. You can also get e-mail addresses for other classmates there. By the time this reaches you, the fall mini-reunion will be history. A record number of '48s in the Big Dartmouth Night Parade were anticipated. Bill Scott is working on the '48 Winter Ski Weekend after the first of the year. You can get the details by calling him at (802) 333-4479.
