Margie and I have had the privilege of hosting the Christmas open house for the Dartmouth Club of San Diego for the past several years and it's such fun to enjoy this eclectic group. It varies from hopeful applicants to old folks like us. For me this year, there were a fellow glee clubber and a fraternity brother to renew memories. The best part of it is the incoming class checking out the real facts about Dartmouth with those still on campus. More than one fencesitter has been satisfied that Dartmouth really is the best Ivy in that way.
Jeanne and Jack Bobbitt juggled three grandchild high school graduations in North Carolina and Florida last year in addition to regular activities in the Newport News area and a Panama Canal cruise. Like so many of us they were amazed at the engineering marvel of the canal .Jack's malingering back was due for repair early this year.
Julian "Fog" Grow is content to stay home and enjoy the San Diego climate. He has enjoyed a longer retirement than most of us due to a golden handshake from the San Diego Union-Tribune, where he was a copyeditor many years ago.
Marty Ullman relocated from Dana Point in Orange County, California, to Santa Rosa in the Sonoma County wine country, purportedly to be near his kids. He has acquired a 1934 Mercedes Roadster that he drives in parades or any other excuse to look cool. He lamented the fact that the China Marines organization to which he belongs by dint of serving there in 1945-46 is falling apart from lack of live members. Following his degree at Dartmouth he and his wife spent a couple of years in China teaching English. They are theater buffs, catching the Ashland, Oregon, festival in the summer and flying to London when they can to enjoy shows there, enjoying their kids' inheritance.
Impresario Nat Merrill says that he has finally retired and is happy being that way. They divide their time between Denver and Vermont but travel to see family and friends here and abroad. They were headed for Austria right after Christmas.
Mouse Taylor is still active in the hardware business in Tampa, Florida, but they moved into the 'burbs and are now reachable in Wesley Chapel, Florida.
