Greetings in the thick of winter. Thanks to many of you who typed e-mails to me, or whose accomplishments I'm now getting from the College.

And on occasion, I run across classmates elsewhere, like Dave krebs, one of Stanford Graduate School of Business's professors who is now a member of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (in the dean's report to the Stanford University). Tom Downey () writes, "Does anyone ever see Randy Hastava? Paul Nelson? Does anyone in our class do economic development work in Asia or Africa? Love to hear from you, as that's what I do.'

Some promotions/new positions to note, too. Marc Johnson is now senior vice president and chief lending officer at Mercantile Bank in Galena, Ill. Must have been a great offer to lure Marc from Aspen, Colo., where he had been VP at Norwest Bank. Marc's also been busy in volunteer work with Junior Achievement, Disabled American Veterans, and Community Paintathon. David Watters, University of New Hampshire professor of English, has been named as the new James H. Hayes and Claire Short Hayes Chair in the Humanities, created to encourage the study of N.H. history. Maybe David can tell us someday about his other duties as vice chair of the trustees of the Robert Frost Homestead in Derry, N.H. And Paul Hodes, who joined the law firm of Shaheen & Gordon, also in New Hampshire. Paul's many past and current memberships include those in ASCAP and the National Association of Music Publishers; sounds like a story for future columns, too.

Writing from Konstanz, Germany (again demonstrating the pervasiveness of e-mail and the Internet), Bill Weston announced that "my ties to Dartmouth have become invigoratingly renewed recently. First off, daughter Kathrin was admitted as a member of the class of '01 this September. Recently spent a glorious fall weekend with Kathrin, climbing Moosilauke, running down the Snapper Trail and canoeing the Connecticut, topped off by a savory sampling of the Norwich Inn's micro-brewery product."

Bill Roberts reports another example of remote support: John Sharer, Bill and Ingrid's best man and godfather of their daughter, Karen, was able to take Bill's place for Karen's parents weekend at Hollins College in Roanoke, where she's a freshman. And per Bill, Farrell Dehnan's son Lorian's T-shirt in hometown Princeton sounds just right: "Just say NO: Friends Don't Let Friends Go to Princeton."

And from fellow Northwesterner Thurm Lowans: "It's been a pretty exciting week around here with a pod of killer whales coming into Dyes Inlet just below us. Judy has been watching them during the week, and I got to see five of them this morning just below our deck swimming along without a care in the world."

Peace to you, too, and keep writing!
