News this month from Down East, although not all that I had hoped. Mike Strout (Falmouth, Maine) has not yet provided details of the Friday the 13th Club. This select group of classmates has met every Friday the 13th since we graduated. As I understand it, Mike is one of die ringleaders. More on this subject in a future column, maybe.
Fern Phillips (Berwick, Maine) has two hockey-playing daughters. Nani is in eighth grade, but plays on the Berwick Academy Varsity squad, while "Jessie is leading her team in assists as a Mite." Nani's team squared off against Jay Josselyn's daughter's team recently, but I don't have the score. Fern reports that Betsy Jewett Coombs and spouse David own and operate a farm equipment manufacturing company in Spokane, Wash. Fern "almost saw Peter Dawkins" last Easter during a visit to Toronto. Peter is juggling numbers for Midland Walwyn Capital, a brokerage firm. And, Fern reports, "Steve Papai is alive and well shredding corporate papers in Northern California. He is married to a major Maniac, Cameron, who tries to kill herself daily by jumping off cliffs (snowboarding)."
Another Maniacal, Carl Little, was awarded The Rising Star Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Carl is director of public affairs at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. He recently published a well-received book tided An of the Maine Islands. This work and Carl's previous books on paintings of Maine and New England are available from Down East Books (800-766-1670).
Bill Duke is not in Maine, nor anywhere near it, but he is working on being taciturn just in case. I tracked Bill down by e-mail at his loft in Manhattan. In response to my inquiry, he reported (in total) "Dear Dick: I'm writing poetry and working in new media. Bill." This prompted the question you'd expect, to which he replied (in total): "New media is non-old media!" Finally, the third time around, Bill reported (with evident exasperation at the thickness of your class secretary's skull): "New media is electronic publishing!" That's the news from Bill. If you want further details, contact .
Carleton Jenkins has been in the news in Southern California. Carleton is the president and CEO of Founders' National Bank, which has expanded under his leadership to five branches in South Central Los Angeles. Founders' Bank has established alliances and partnerships with a number of major banks and corporations, including ARCO, Bank of America, and Sumitomo Bank. This is the second successful bank Carleton has founded the first being Dryades Savings Bank in Louisiana.
Tom Bush is a lawyer in Chicago, where he has a litigation practice. Tom and Crystal (Yale '76) live in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, with two children, Meryl (11) and Peter (8). Tom coaches boys' basketball and girls' softball. .
One fall, some years ago, I had a great time hitchhiking across Canada. I have particularly good memories of the beautiful Ottawa River valley (aside a surprise overnight stay in the Pembroke, Ontario, jail—mistaken identity, let's leave it at that). It was thus a pleasure to hear from Tim Beasley who reports that he is "well and living in lovely Chelsea, Quebec. I run the Ottawa branch of an information systems consulting firm based in Vancouver, B.C. I have a 13-year-old son and a daughter who is 10. In the last year I have seen Sandy Fitchet (living in McLean, Va.) and Chuck Nagle (living in Hanover)." .
Many thanks to those who wrote or replied to my e-mails. I've just received the updated class list. If you want to track down a classmate, let me know. And please send news!
