Belated kudos to Steven Kang, who was one of eight interns at the UCSF-affiliated San Francisco General Hospital last year to receive an award for excellence in patient care "as exemplified by clinical competence, professional conduct, concern for patients, and interaction with all level of staff, including peers." Last year Matt Freeman was made a partner at the advertising agency Poppe Tyson, where he is creative director. Matt's other great news: he and his wife, Robin Levine Freeman, are the proud parents of Sawyer Caleb, born July 13.
David Martosko was married in September to Susan Wheeler (Oberlin '94). Megan Brimijoin Vaules and Dheeraj Mukherjee were among the Dartmouth graduates who attended the wedding. David and Susan met in the summer of 1993 when they worked for Opera North (in Vermont), which is run by Dartmouth Glee Club Director Louis Burkot. The musically inclined couple lives outside of Baltimore, where David is the new director of music at a local Methodist church and Susan sings with regional opera companies and a traveling opera for children.
Christian Kull has exciting plans this year: he's off to the highlands in Madagascar to research the politics and ecology of grassland fires. Upon return, he'll finish up his Ph.D. in environmental science, policy, and management at U.C. Berkeley. Also in the Bay Area are fellow '91 Kenya FSP'ers: David Newman, Derek Yegian, Karen (Cramer) Peterson, Jon Peterson, who regularly get together to hike, bike, climb, and sail.
Jon Murchinson e-mailed me to share updates on fellow classmates. He writes, "Jon Austen oversees production at one of Reebok's factories in China. (He claims no prison labor is involved.) Pat Burtis has forsaken the life of a management consultant for that of a folk singer. His debut CD, Three Days in the Box (or is that Three Days in the Basement), is available at Tower Records and Newbury Comics in the Boston area.
Went to a Washington Capitals game with Raf Aguirre-Sacasa and Sean Regan. Raf was home for Christmas from San Francisco, where he is upholding the good reputation of the legal profession. Sean recently relocated to northern Virginia from Colorado. (I couldn't figure out why either.)" Jon lives in Washington, D.C., and is an assistant press secretary at the White House.
I ran into Jordy Green over the holidays at Patrick Henry's (formerly Peter Christian's) in Hanover. Jordy was visiting his family in New Hampshire, but now he's back in Hungary, where he's working for a bank. (That's my simplified version of his career.)
Please take note of my new e-mail address. I've signed on with the Vox Alumni Network's "free e-mail for life." If you haven't checked it out already, run right over to your website-friendly computer and look up to get yours.
