The Ph.D.s I missed listing in the April issue were quick to respond. It was good to hear from my Gile friend, Art Ekirch, who is w I Ph.D. He said Halsey Bullen, M.D., BUI Heroy, Ph.D., and he came to Dartmouth from White Plains High, and Bill and Art were both Phi Beta Kappa. Certainly a distinguished delegation from White Plains. Another Ph.D., Al Martin, wrote to remind us that he earned a Ph.D. in colonial history at University of lowa on June 2,1941. Eight days later he was a private in the U.S. Army, and he believes he was the first Ph.D. drafted. Al was sent to Hawaii and played football for the Engineers. However, the championship game on December 7 was interrupted by the day of infamy. Al spent three and one-half years in the S.W. Pacific. During the last year of the war, he was in command of the 16 th Engineer Construction Battalion, which earned two Presidential Unit Citations.
Please add Kimball Hall to the M.D. list.
We have two additions to the June list of lawyers: Josiah Fowler and Senator Thomas J. Mclntyre. How could I miss Tom?
On May 23, 1998, the Town of Brownsville, Vt., dedicated a monument to celebrate the town's 150 th anniversary. In recognition of the many years of service to the Historical Society, the library, and the town, Fran and Mary Fenn were honored by being invited to unveil the monument. Fran serves Brownsville as well as his class. I can recommend the Brownsville bean suppers on Saturday nights in July and August. For delightful summer reading, you will enjoy Hal Putnam's Yankee Journal. He reminisces of our Hanover years, and his writing of his close relationship with three speakers of the House John W. McCormack, Joseph W. Martin Jr., and Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. and Boston politics are fascinating, even if you are not from Boston.
President Charlie Collis has invited and received an acceptance from James Wright, the 16th president of Dartmouth College, to speak to our class at the mini-reunion Friday evening dinner, October 2, 1998.
Hope to see you at the mini-reunion October 2 and 3.
