I take up my new duties with some pleasure and with some trepidation, and under two severe restrictions. The deadlines are two months ahead of publication and the word limit is 350. But here goes!
Having just spent my fifth successive summer season in Hanover, president CharlieCollis and emeritus Ben Doran felt it appropriate to tap me to succeed CarlErdman, who is sorely missed by all of us. I appreciate their confidence, and the additional blessing of Bill Rotch.
Bill and Patty are just back from Cuba, still determined to save the world. Bless them for their indomitable spirit. Ben still lives in Hanover, but is readying to move to Newton, Mass., near his daughter Brewer.
Charlie Blaisdell is trying to help me find a publisher for my historical novel, SalemLady. We'll keep you posted.
Chick Koop is now living in a new development across the street from the Med School. Have you seen his famous name on the stock ticker?
Bruce Manternach has given up his Vero Beach winter home. We'll miss him. HankDoremus is the only other '37 buddy that I see there regularly.
Paul W. Dickson of East Aurora, N.Y., keeps a canoe at the Ledyard Canoe Club. Warren Daniell '22, one of the founders of the club, is still living in Hanover—at 98!
John Endicott Emerson and I are keeping our family history alive. He grew up in the 1648 Putnam/Emerson homestead in Danvers, Mass.
Did you know? Samson Occom never made it to Hanover? In 1773 there were 342 souls in Hanover—90 students and 80 unmarried females. Much better ratio than in the 19305!
