David Hunt writes: "Last month, seeing Salma Hayek's picture next to the name of Chris Davidson '76 (whom I know well) provided sufficient inspiration to write. My new family and I are alive, well, and living in Portland, efforts of some to the contrary notwithstanding. I married Liz Pearce (Middlebury 'B2) in 1987. We have two children, Alexandra 9 and Thomas 7. Alex is autistic, which has proven to be both a joy and a challenge, but it also means we are done breeding. I came to Maine in 1981 from New York City to join the state's largest law firm, Pierce Atwood, then run by Fred Scribner '30, now dead. For a variety of reasons that I am sure trusts-and-estates lawyers in large firms all around the country could identify with, I left Pierce Atwood in 1992 to start a firm called McCandless & Hunt with my theretofore associate, Ms. McCandless. I left there to go on my own in the summer of 1997 and here I am. Liz, who is a lawyer (U.Maine '85) helps me out, and we restrict our practice to estate planning, estate administration, and other such stuff.
"I have regular contact, in person and by telephone, with Bud "The Ox" Leese,Brian "Sulz" O'Sullivan, and, by telephone, with Mark "the Weenie"McAleenan. All are as well as middle age allows. Ox and Sulz and their respective families have been meeting us in Rangeley, Maine, for a week each summer for several years, although this summer looks like it might be iffy.
"The Ox is a general practice physician with the Matthew Thornton HMO in Nashua. Sulz is a pediatric pulmonologist on the staff at the University of Massachusetts Medical School at Worcester. Each of them has two kids. Bud's are Amanda 14 (I think) a star swimmer who is switching to basketball, and Nelson 11 (I think), who can beat his father at chess. Sulz's kids are Conor 17 and Whitney 14. Conor became an Eagle Scout last year and Whitney is a dancer. Remarkably, all four are nice kids.
"Even more remarkably, Bud and Sulz both remain married to their original wives. Buddy (like me on the first go) married his high-school sweetheart, Claudia Zent, who continues to manage to put up with him. Sulz is married to Nancy Friedrichs, a Yoker whom he met at Dart Col. I am both bored and bemused by the continuing homogenization of my alma mater with the rest of politically correct America. There used to be a posting on the bulletin board in the classics department that said 'Heu, heu, quotidie peius. Haec universitas retroversus crescit tanquam coda vituli.' Truer words were never spoken."
I am sad to report that John Dockum passed away at Christmas 1998. He died of a heart attack. John was a pre-med student at Dartmouth. He served as managing editor of The Dartmouth. He was an elder in the Mormon Church and a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity. At graduation he described himself as a poet, hiker, and journalist. John obtained his medical degree from the University of Nebraska. He married his spouse, Lori, in 1977. He became a family practice physician and was practicing medicine in Kennewick, Wash., until his death. He was also active in enrollment activities for Dartmouth. John is survived by Lori and children Nanette, Nollie, Rikker, Bekka, Kira, and Kaylee.
