In the April issue of Memphis Magazine, an article was published honoring some of the best and brightest former contributors, to commemorate the magazine's 20th anniversary. Larry Conley, editor from 19851990, was featured.

"Larry came to us from the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at Oxford, Miss., and during his tenure here focused primarily on tough, hard-hitting issues. A graduate of Manassas High School and Dartmouth, he left Memphis for cooler pastures in Michigan, where for three years he served as associate editor of Detroit Free Press' Sunday magazine, and launched a new column on race, gender, and generational issues, among other things.

Today, Larry serves as editor of the Perspective section of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a Sunday feature for analysis, commentary, and in-depth reporting. In 1994, the section was named Best Overall Section by the Association of Opinion Page Editors."

David Rousse has been named vice president of marketing and business development for Specialty Paperboard Inc. Most recently, he served as business manager for Strathmore Papers in Westfield, Mass.

In the words of Alex Kwader, president and CEO of Special Paperboard, "Dave will be responsible for furthe developing our business strategies, managing our international sales effort, and supporting our ongoing acquisition program. He will play a lead role in our growth." Dave earned a graduate degree in engineering from Thayer, and an M.B.A. from Tuck.

Ron Akie has been promoted to executive vice president and general manager of the regional service center of The Faxon Cos., a unit of Dawson North America. Previously, Ron served as senior vice president of marketing for Dawson North America.

In his new position, Ron will oversee the operations of Faxon's 300-employee Westwood service office, including customer service, information technology, human resources, and general administration. After Dartmouth, Ron earned an M.A. from the University of Virginia, and an M.B.A. from Suffolk University.

I recently caught up with Tom Denison, who is currently senior vice president with Bank of America in Chicago. Tom had been with Continental Bank about 15 years before it was acquired by Bank of America. He now manages a Midwestern Corporate Banking Group.

Tom ancl his wife, Jeanne, have been married about IS years, and have three children. Christine (11) is in a children's singing group which has been selected to be in the cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with Donny Osmond on stage in the Chicago Theater this fall. Kate (9) is a competitive figure skater with an eye on the Olympics. Matt (8) is an ice hockey player.

Tom has been president of the school board in Northbrook for three years. This involves overseeing how the school administration runs the elementary school system. Tom's commitment to the elementary school system reflects his belief in the importance of laying a good educational foundation.

Tom told me a very inspiring story. About five years ago, he started a fitness routine to get in better shape. He now runs five to eight miles a day, five days a week. He ran in the NYC marathon in '94, and finished in less than four hours. He also competed in the Chicago Triathlon this summer.

Today, he weighs less than he did when he graduated from Dartmouth. (Anyone jealous?)

A plea for news. I welcome calls and letters from anyone who wants to stay in touch, so please do!
