Late last fall Blake Winchell wrote: "I'm trying to be a responsible representative to the Alumni Council for the class of '75. I'm serving on the Academic Affairs Committee, as well as the council at large, and would encourage any classmates to e-mail me at with thoughts they would like to share with the council. Ran into Louise (Smith) Pencavel this summer at Stanford Sierra Camp. Louise was an exchange student and involved with the Dartmouth Players. We laughed over old times. Louise said she had lost track of a couple of our classmates, and would love to hear from them. They are Peter Syvertsen, Greg Northcraft, and "King" Richard Carroll '76. Contact Louise at 20 Sneckner Court, Menlo Park, CA 94025; (650)-854-5408. We're in the swing of fall; taking advantage of the Veteran's Day holiday to take our three kids to Disneyland. I can't wait to have breakfast with Goofy!!!"
Hal Macartney is currently spending a lot of time in Houston. He is working on a project in Brazil with Texaco, opening up blocs for participation with foreign partners with a national oil company down there. Hal says it's "pretty interesting." "Call me the man who is in love with Jacksonville, Fla.," says Andy Johnson, recalling that, at age 25, he was the youngest person ever to serve in the Florida legislature. Now Andy is serving the community as a talk show host at WVOJ, a small AM station on University Boulevard. He says, "Radio gives people who want to change the community the opportunity to get involved." His ultimate goal would be to do a two- or three-hour local show in the morning, and then do a nationally syndicated show in the afternoon. WVOJ doesn't mind that he wears a suit and tennis shoes to work. Andy and his wife live in Jacksonville. They have three children.
Art Schwarzwaelder has been elected to the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County. Paul Serenbetz, an English teacher at The Morgan School, has been named 1998-99 Clinton Teacher of the Year. According to Principal William Barney, "He is what a teacher of the year really is somebody who absolutely enjoys what he does." Barney adds that Serenbetz's creative lessons stay with students after they graduate, as shown when students come back and talk about the insight Serenbetz gave them. Paul, who resides in New Haven, has been at The Morgan School for 20 years enjoying the high-school age group. He says he decided to be an English teacher for several reasons. "I like a good story and I like kids. I want to be able to show them a good story, whether it is Shakespeare or Dickens, and talk about how it is crafted. I want to challenge the students, but also try to make what we do relevant to their lives. To exemplify what it means to be a teacher, you need to be committed. It takes a lot of time."
