This secretary business can become complicated. A couple of months ago I reported the "death" of a wellknown class widow (she's very much alive at Hilton Head). A classmate contacted the college saying his name was not included with the "group of 11" (my term for those who graduated summa cum laude) in the November column. He was only magna cum laude, sorry. The November column also brought e-mail from Dennis Kaufman '66 (his father was George Margulis, who died in 1948) asking where I got "great class" when referring to 1935. My response was this likely originated with Reg Bankart when he authored the Tear Bag. I've inquired around, including 30 or so who attended Yank Price's annual Christmas party at Hanover Inn, and all concurred that "great class" sounds like Reg. As for Dennis, he lives in Norwich, Vt., and I learned via e-mail from Dick Hube that Dennis was a friend of Yank's son Fred and they were fraternity brothers in college.
Speaking of the Tear Bag, editor DeroSaunders has retired, his hies have been passed to Dick Hube, and at the moment the job is looking for a replacement. Any volunteers? Dero and wife Bea are now living in Richmond, Va. (814 Westwood Ave., the zip is 23222). Eleanor Smith sends word that Jackie Baas '35H, former director of Hood Museum, has retired as director of the University of California Art Museum in Berkeley "to do some writing and follow other interests."
There's a fascinating story waiting to be written about Bill Gahagan, who in May will become the second member of the "great class" to be honored with a Wearer of the Green award (first was DonRadasch for his work on behalf of the athletics sponsorship program). Bill's achievements are in tennis: two senior national championships, member of several USA teams, and the Mulloy Cup played in Austria. Gahagan left college his senior year and was 36 years old when he earned his "D" in tennis, oldest in the Ivy League at the time.
Saul Deitel died Sept 10, 1998, in Tucson, Ariz., from leukemia. Saul had been active in the Dartmouth Club of Tucson as president and secretary. The class also has lost Richard Gulick Miller. Dick came from White River Junction but did not graduate.
