It is, as has been said of this great class, so rich in its resources and so generous in sharing its bounty. In this regard, Bob Malin writes, "The unique Dartmouth Class of 1953 Charitable Trust continues to progress toward its goal a substantial, enduring, and distinctive gift to the College at our 50th Reunion in June 2003. At the present encouraging rate of growth, total assets will soon approach $4 million as gifts from classmates, both cash and appreciated securities, arrive almost weekly. Assets are mostly in common stocks, but the trust's real estate assets also show signs of increasing value. It's already clear that our gift whatever form it ultimately takeswill have measureable beneficial impact on Dartmouth, If you haven't made your contribution, now's the time, so it can grow even larger by 2003!" Bob concludes with the news from Harbour Ridge that Rachel Senne has purchased a house there, and he visited with Father Ed Boyle, who is recovering nicely from his surgery. He also bumped into Leo Clancy, Kent Robinson, Bob Simpson, and Howard Clery, all basking in the sun. George Sarner writes that he remains with Bear Steams (and will continue for as long as they want him) and that he and Patty spend ten days a month at their winter home in Stuart, Fla., where their five grandchildren visit them regularly.
From the West comes the news that JimSullivan has been named California State University, Northridge's interim chief financial officer. Jim had retired as vice chancellor of the University of California, Davis in 1991, and since then has held two other interim positions. In this new position Jim will be responsible for streamlining the university's fiscal operations, and overseeing the continued reconstruction of the campus from the $390 million in damage sustained during the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
Change is in the offing for Tom Wilson as he moves from chairman of the board of Information Resources Inc. to its interim CEO. Tom has been on the board at IRI for the past six years. In addition to leading the company, Tom will head the search committee to find a new CEO.
In the Graduating Engineer & Computer Careers Journal, November-December 1999 edition, Jim Wheaton is featured in an article which depicts him as an engineer whose writing and communication skills have enabled him to pursue a successful career writing proposals and reports, product documentation, feature articles for trade publications, and marketing materials for client companies. And this is not Jim's only writing endeavor or success. He has just brought a long-time project to fruition, completing his book of the letters and diaries written by his great, great-grandfather, Dr. Charles Bracken, during the Civil War. It is being published by Guild Press of Indiana, and should be out in March. Jim hopes that it will be picked up by Barnes and Noble for distribution. Congratulations, Jim!
That's my news for now. Please keep the information coming. We'd love to hear from you. Cheers, and have a little fun today!
