Warren "Zog" Loomis and I talked recently. Zog sold his business, Logic Associates of Lebanon, New Hampshire, about a year ago. "What are you up to, Warren? " I asked. "Plenty of things. I've been interested in building boats, particularly rowboats where you can see where you are going as you row." I always knew that Warren was a forward-thinking fellow, but I didn't know that he insisted on rowing while forward looking. Warren finished Thayer School of Engineering in 1963 and then went on to earn a Ph.D. in metallurgy at the University of Michigan. From there, he returned to the North Country and into the field of computers, which pretty much occupied his vocational time until recently. Now boats.

In some of his inventions the oarsman reclines, pedals and runs a propeller. In another the oarsman activates an air propeller. There even is one where you pull on the oar, which, through a gear and a split lever, reverses the pull. Keep an eye out for unusual rowboats and see if the name Loomis is on the hull.

Paul Snow served in the Navy after college, had a stint with Continental Can Corp., and for a number of years has been with First Union Securities in Deer field, Illinois. Paul advises clients on investments, the economy, estates and life. We talked on the phone recently, but Paul wouldn't forecast for me where the economy would be as this column is published. Smart. He has been an avid sailor for years and was able to help in some notable nautical achievements on Lake Michigan. It seems that there is a race from Chicago to Mackinaw Island that goes back a long way. The fastest time had been set in 1910 at 31 hours and 14 minutes. Then in 1987 a 70-foot sloop named Pied Piper, sailed the course in 25 hours and 50 minutes! Paul was the navigator. That record still stands. Paul explained that his daughter Kate recently graduated from the University of Vermont and his son Healey is studying radio and TV production at Bostons Emerson College. Paul and his wife, Judy, live in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Don't forget to mark your calendars for our 40th reunion, Monday, June 10, through Thursday, June 13. Rowboats, sailboats and more!
