Tom Noyes is a happy man. For the past six years he has been mentoring Portland, Oregon-area business and community leaders through his company, Ten Associates. "It's not a job," he writes, its who I am. Otherwise he's occupied with kayaking, fishing and sourdough-bread making.

Tom and his wife of 16 years June, a flight attendant, are raising their ninth-grade son Jim. Tom has four older children, and his youngest, Jane, made him a grandfather last May. Generally, Tom sums up, "I'm loving life and letting it love me!"

Talk about loving life—15 intrepid '66ers, accompanied by about a dozen camp followers, participated in what now is being billed as the first annual '66 Connecticut River Canoe Trip from August 25 to 27. The group drove about 60 miles up I-91 to Mclndoe Falls in Monroe, New Hampshire, on Friday, moving south by paddle and brief portage to Howard Island for the first night. Saturday found the pioneers marveling at great blue herons and bald eagles on their way to Orford. Sunday's shorter home stretch led directly to a Ledyard Canoe Club lasagna lunch.

The largest family contingent was Steve Hayes, wife Barbara and teen kids Emily and Peter. Two dad-son combos—Dave Stedman and 11-year-old Patrick and Tim Urban and lowa high school senior Jonathan maintained a strong pace throughout. Couples included Connie and Bill Ryan from Rhode Island; Anne and John Rollins from Washington, D.C.; Connie and Gary Broughton from New Jersey; Rosa and Chuck Benson from Massachusetts; and Ted Thompson and Anne Crory all the way from Orford! Traveling solo were Bob Serenbetz, Allan Ryan, Bob Bryant, Bob Bach and Jeff Gilbert. Professor Dick Birnie and wife Piete played a major role in planning and executing the complex maneuvers and received beaucoup praise for provisioning the troops in grand style—including marinated chicken Friday night and potato cheese soup and thick juicy steaks Saturday.
