First of all, congratulations to all of you who made the Alumni Fund so successful this year. Overall the fund raised more than $23 million, a new record (up 16 percent in one year!). And our class kicked in $286,424, with 351 classmates and a 55-percent participation rate. And round of snaps to John Pfeiffer, who led the effort. Classmate snapshots are mostly from clippings, from the past few months. From The Boston Globe: Don Miller is suing Universal Studios and Miramax Films for $16 million, alleging that the Oscar-winning screenplay of Shakespeare in Love was in fact derived from his own screenplay The Dark Lady. His own efforts on the concept and screenplay began in 1983, when he was living in Los Angeles. With a friend, he developed a 58-page screenplay, which was offered to the Hollywood producers at least five times between 1986 and 1992. In 1992 Shakespeare in Love appeared as a very similar screenplay, by different authors. Lawyers for each author team communicated, and Shakespeare in Love didn't proceed. But in 1998 it did go into production, and Don and his co-screenwriter of The Dark Lady learned too late to do anything but seek damages. Trial expected this fall. During all of these years in Hollywood, Don wrote three non-fiction books and many screenplays (none yet produced) and taught tai chi. Now, he's back in Arlington, Massachusetts, still teaching tai chi and awaiting the results of the case. If he wins, besides the money he is hoping perhaps Hollywood will call for some of those unproduced screenplays. As some Hollywood mogul once said: Throw that guy off the lot forever. Until the next time we need him.' " From the Pekin Times in Illinois: John Remsen was recently named president of the Herget National Bank, which he had joined as executive vice president in 1999. After leaving Dartmouth, John got his M.B.A. from De- Paul University and started his banking career with Harris Bank in Chicago. From there he moved into marketing and consulting in his own firm, the Marcom Group in Champaign, and served as a senior officer with banks in Mattoon and Urbana. He and wife Garland moved to Pekin, Illinois, when he joined Herget. From an Internet announcement: Tom Laughlin joined major pharmaceutical company Zila Inc. of Phoenix, Arizona, as chief operating officer. Prior to joining Zila, Tom had been senior vice president for Global New Business at Bayer Inc., and earlier at Pharmacia and Upjohn Inc. At Upjohn he was closely associated with Motrin and Rogaine (headaches and hair...is there some connection?). Earlier still, he was with Procter and Gamble (Oil of Olay), Pfizer (Visine and BenGay) and Gillette. He got his M.B.A. at Boston University. Hope your fall is going well. Send news!
