Leon Black, managing general partner of Apollo Investment Fund, has been named to the board of directors of Allied Waste Industries Inc. Leon is also a director of Samsonite Corp., Sequa Industries Inc., United Rentals Inc., Vail Resorts Inc. and Wyndham International Inc.

Kel Chin has departed NYC's Silicon Alley to return to LA's Silicon Valley as executive vice president of Agree Online.com, an Internet start-up in Los Angeles that will provide mediation and arbitration services. Kel rejoins wife Peg and their children and dramatically lowers his long-distance bills.

Wolfgang Pfahler '71 reported from Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany, that the Hungarian pavilion displayed the work of eminent Hungarian scientists, including the late former Dartmouth president John Kemeny, the developer of BASIC computer language.

Congressman Mike Capuano heard Bostons "Back Bay Chorale" (that includes five former members of the Dartmouth Glee Club) sing for the opening and the closing ceremonies of Boston's AIDS Walk2000. The event in Mike's district raised more than $2 million.

Yale Law professor and deputy dean Kate Stith-Cabranes was a guest speaker at the 16th annual meeting of the Dartmouth Lawyers Association in Hanover. Last June Kate concluded her term as a trustee of the College.

Mitchell Kurz, former vice chairman of Young & Rubicam Inc., has joined the board of directors of Extraprise, an international e-services firm based in Boston. Mitch has an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and is currently chairman of Kurz & Friends, a business and marketing consultancy.

Gregg Brown was named Builder of the Year by Builder and Developer, a magazine for the California, Nevada and Arizona residential building industry. Gregg's company, CAMASHCO Inc., is named for his and wife Debra's three children: CAM for Cameron; ASH for Ashley; and CO for Corey. He just ended a two-year term as president of the Building Industry Association of southern California.

Jim Ryan is a founding stockholder and the chief technology officer for an Internet start-up called "nobodydoes.com inc." At reporting time he could say only that the firm is "in the financial area." Jim is also president of the Dartmouth Club of NYC.

For those still searching late at night for a glimpse of Bob Ryan on FX channel's Son of theBeach, watch for "the Evil Genius," also called in the past "the Evil Professor." Bob's character is a Stephen Hawkins' knock-off, complete with a motorized wheelchair (essential for the beach terrain) and a computer assisted communications system.
