In 1998, Dartmouth was tops in computing according to Yahoo!Internet Life. The magazine proclaimed Dartmouth "the nation's leader in integrating computers into the everyday life of the campus." But the glory was short-lived. In 1999 Yahoo! dropped Dartmouth down to No. 26. This year the College bounced back up to No. 5. Woe to the prospective student trying to evaluate a colleges computing environment using Yahoo! Like U.S. News, Yahoo! changes its criteria from one year to the next, creating the rollercoaster results.
"Our reaction is the same each year," says Larry Levine, Dartmouth's director of computing. "We're pleased if we have a high ranking. But we do not use this survey as a guide for what we do with the computing environment. It's not entirely valid or reliable."
