Thanking me for my note of condolence came a letter from Bob Wagner's daughters, Marma and Cynthia: "He was fortunate to have a great quality of life up until and one month beyond his 91st birthday. Still chairman of the board of his company, he conducted his last board meeting several days before breaking his hip. How wonderful that there are still 95 of his classmates left."
Al Sutton wrote that if all goes well, he'll be touring Alaska, probably in August. Regarding his comments on student life in our day in Hanover, I look forward to knowing what he—and others—may think of President Wright's informative letter of December 1999 to the Dartmouth family.
Holiday greetings came from: Vance Dickerman who wanted an explanation of how we beat Princeton this past November; Mildred and Bob Powell, who were to visit a daughter in Alabama; Ellen and JohnChamberlin, the latter slowly on the mend; Jean Davis, widow of John, who will face the new century without a computer (join the club, Jean); and Spence Miller, whose son Charlie '69 was to drive Spence to New Jersey for a holiday visit with daughter Anne. On a sad note, however, Bill Walsh called to tell me that George Conklin passed on.
In the December 16 letter from Dick Jaeger, director of athletics, regarding my proposal to renovate and transform Memorial Field, was the advice of the consultants to the College: "The track and Memorial Field need to stay right in place until such time as the College might determine an alternate site."
