In my note of condolence to Lee Andrews's daughter Anne Ellis in San Mateo, I mentioned that I remembered that city well because our football team had resided in the Benjamin Franklin Hotel there prior to the Stanford game. I asked her if the hotel still existed, and she replied that it was indeed operating, with a fine restaurant which her family patronized.
The football team finished strong again at Penn, but couldn't quite pull off a win against the tough Penn defense led by John Good willie's grandson Patrick. At the game and during our mini-reunion were seen Boermeester,Brummer, John H. Chamberlin, Conklin,Hobbs, Loveland, Lyall, and Walsh with respective spouses, plus Lucy Cogswell, RoseMcCarthy, and sole classmates Frame,Lyons, and Studwell. Also most welcome were Bryan Hill '97, grandson of the Boermeesters, who had just finished a summer term in Italy, and Kara Maley, granddaughter of Bill Lyons, a young lady most knowledgeable about football.
Spence Miller was unable to attend the mini due to his physician's advice. Subsequently he wrote that he'd gone to the Fordham game, and was still considering the Princeton game November 19. Charlie Schneider was another who couldn't make it. Both were greatly missed.
During my quest for new Friends of Dartmouth Football I received a call from FrankGeorge, who not only had become a new Friend, but had persuaded the head of the Jacksonville Dartmouth Club to also join and to make the same request at the club meeting during which the Cornell game would be telecast.
My request also brought a long letter from Charlie Dwyer, who reported that he and Marnee are still hitting on most cylinders, but that he doesn't drive on high-speed roads a condition which many of us share and their chief interest lies in the achievements of their grandchildren, both top students in high school. Charlie also reported having talked last summer with Allan Rikkola, who admitted to playing golf regularly if not too well.
