A. Benedict Doran called at 5 p.m. on January 6 to say goodbye—to me, to Marlne and to our class. The doctors have pronounced his condition terminal. I did my best to express our gratitude for his wonderful life. A mighty oak is falling, leaving an empty space against the sky. Virginia Heer, the widow of Walter Jr., writes for the address of Carolyn Erdman the widow of Carl Erdman. Our sympathies are with both of them. All classmate spouses are reminded that they are fully accredited members of our class.
J. Willcox Brown has been awarded the 1999 Dartmouth Environmental Award "for his lifelong dedication to the protection and enhancement of all things natural." President Wright seems to be winning his campaign to improve social life facilities at the alma mater. I shed some blood on the Tucker Foundation board a decade ago for a faculty resident in dorms and for strict alcohol controls. We Puritans seem to be prevailing. Won't hurt anyone except the rare bad apple. Goodbye to him. The troublemaker is rarely a "her"!
