By the time these notes reach you in October our 67th mini-reunion will be history. We plan to honor our distinguished classmate Chick Koop, whose 88th birthday occurs just one day ahead of that October 15-16 weekend. His national fame has been boosted considerably in recent months by his TV endorsement of Life Alert. You hang it around your neck and never need worry about being alone. Chick is perfect for the patriarchal role and he goes over well among our Florida elderly.

The grandson of our late classmate Al Mayer is a member of the class of 2008. We have invited Zach Albert Mayer to dine with us at the mini-reunion.

Sally Smith, our girl helper at the 65th, is now at Thayer School, and will be with us also. Her grandmother, Evelyn D. Smith, and classmate Hank Doremus will be joining me on the trip up from Florida. President Stan Berenson is counting on Charlie and Ellen Collis to make sure the meals are super at the Hanover Inn.

Mary Fenn is getting super coverage in her local paper for her book. Half page photo of the author! She attended the Harty Beardsley funeral in Blue Hill, Maine. Warm letters went to widow Peg from president Stan Berenson and longtime DOC buddy Will Brown.

My classmate cousin, John Endicott Emerson, has reached 90, with a 95-year-old sister, Miriam, and a 99-year-old brother, Edward. Ed was Dartmouth also, and for many years the secretary of his class (1926).

Word has just reached me of the death of former Dartmouth president, David McLaughlin. I am indebted to him for an appointment to the board of visitors of the Tucker Foundation in the 1980s. I favored severe punishments for students who abuse drugs, alcohol or women, and I favored apartment residences for faculty or graduate student families in dormitories. The former is slow in coming but the latter has been fully implemented at Yale. Some of the old Yankee values look better and better with the passage of time.
