During the latter part of February VicBorella gave a talk to members of the Senior Class at Harvard concerning industrial relations as a career and participated in a panel discussion with two other men on the subject. That event afforded Vic the opportunity for a much needed vacation and, after spending two days in Boston, Vic and Ceil planned to spend about a week in the Laurentians. One evening while they were in Boston Caroline and I met them at their hotel and the four of us proceeded in our car along Dartmouth Street. I couldn't help but notice that the taxi on our right was more than usually obstreperous and I was therefore prompted to do something about it—such as a fleeting but determined glare at the taxi driver. You can imagine the reaction of all occupants of our car when it was discovered that the occupants of the taxi were none other than Carol and Carl Haffenreffer who were waving to us and were undoubtedly responsible for the somewhat unusual antics of the taxi driver. A brief Class Reunion was held on the wet and snowy sidewalk of Dartmouth Street, whereupon Carl and Carol had to leave to review one of Carl's television shows advertising that "Guess what."
The 1930 contingent at the Boston Alumni Association dinner on March 1 was smaller than usual, but the smaller number made it possible to get up to date with those who were there. The group included Gordon Hoxie,Howie Eldredge, Dick Barnard, Herb Chase,Nels Flanders and Les Godwin.
The list of officers elected by the Directors of New England Trust Company at their last annual meeting included Lin Savage as an Assistant Vice President. This represented a well-deserved promotion for Lin, who has held the office of Associate Trust Officer in the bank up until the time of his recent promotion Announcement was made on February 2 of the appointment of Freddy Bowes as Director of Public Relations and Advertising of Pitney-Bowes, Inc During the latter part of February Freddy Page, Vice President of Tricontinental Corporation, an investment company, was elected a member of the Board of Directors of Brooklyn Union Gas Corporation. What with a directorate with Atlantic City Electric Co., Freddy is certainly involved in the public utilities field.
Would you ever attempt to guess the hobbies of some of your classmates? Charlie Ranch has been receiving the plaudits of the New York group for his continuous efforts on behalf of the Class and Class affairs. It may surprise many of you to know, however, that Charlie is more than an ordinary authority on the subject of organic gardening, concerning which he lectured to the Farmington, Conn. Garden Club on Washington's Birthday. From a most reliable and conscientious source, we understand that Charlie's talk was so stimulating that some of the ladies of the organization were later seen digging up the snow from patches of their gardens so that they might immediately try some of Charlie's theories and suggested practices.....sam Stayman was a member of the team which, on February 12, won the Vanderbilt Cup, which is emblematic of top honors in this country in bridge. This is just one more of the many and repeated such honors for Sam as he has been a national bridge champion for several years We understand that Art Hayes recently purchased a new home in the Briarcliff Manor section of Westchester County on property adjoining Briarcliff Junior College We also understand that Barbara and Jesse Lichter have become active in Harrison, Westchester County affairs since they moved to their new home A recent note from Al McGrath contained the following report:
"Norm McGrath, the big 'bag man,' phoned recently while changing planes at La Guardia Airport I forgot to inquire whether his takeoff was for Florida—for each year when snow and cold hit us poor New Yorkers, 'N.E.' finds that important business (?) forces (?) him to rush to sunny southlands."
The College recently opened up the Chase Farm property in Hanover, just west of Velvet Rocks. Three of Hanover 30's are lot owners and future neighbors on this most desirable location. Hank Odbert, Snub Poehler and Charlie Widmayer have each acquired a bit of that sacred Hanover soil and we may expect to see some building in the not too distant future Captain Jack Smith reports from the Pensacola Naval Air Station that he is Director of the Dispensary Division and Head of the Aviation Physical Standards Section of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Navy Department, and that part of his job is to see that we get our money's worth out of the dollars paid to Uncle Sam which are used for Navy purposes. Jack very cogently remarks that since the anatomy is the same in the Army, Navy and Air Force, he does not have too much trouble with unification Dr. Dave Latham sent a report which we asked him to amplify in some respects, but before the news gets too old we wanted to get it to you. Dave says that he saw Heinie Lewin in Chicago last October while both of them were attending the Convention of the American College of Surgeons. Dave continues in surgery work with Ernie. They share a common office suite of 11 rooms in the center of Lowell. Dave's note concluded:
"Since last writing a line to you I have remarried, to Harriet Flemings, Wheaton '35. We are at home on 38 Boston Road, Chelmsford with our four children, Donald 9, David 8, Deborah 5 and Kathleen 21 months and one on order."
Merit "Whitey" White, who is Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, was recently appointed to the Committee on Applied Mechanics of the Structural Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers, this Committee being formed to promote professional development in the fields of structures and applied mechanics. In addition to his C.E. degree from Thayer School, received in 1931. Whitey holds a Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology, which he received in 1935. During the war he was on special assignment to the Armed Forces, was with the office of scientific research and development and later analyzed bomb damage for the U. S. strategic bombing survey. Whitey received the President's certificate of merit in 1948. The list of engineering associations and societies to which Whitey belongs is merely further evidence of the position which he holds in his field.
My own son, upon returning from the February session of the Hanover Inn Ski School, reported with great glee to me that HankNovell's boy and Frank Ryder's youngest daughter Sally were fellow members of the Ski School session. He also reported having seen Frank and Rollie Booma in Hanover during the week of February 20. We understand that Frank took to the ski slopes himself but we have no such report concerning Rollie Other visitors at the Inn during February were Jerry Goodman, Gene Magenau, the Paul Hoffmans and the Bob Walkers.
Remember the Alumni Fund. It is your Fund for your College.
THE SKIING RYDERS: Frank Ryder '30, of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and his family spent a week in Hanover in February while daughter Sally attended the Hanover Inn Ski School. Left to right are Sally, 10, Joan, 14, wife Dorothy and Frank. Sally proudly wears a Ski School ribbon.
