Robert O. Berger Jr., adopted member of the class of 1940 and husband of Ann Berger, died at Kendal at Hanover on January 12, 2000. Bob had been in a coma and died peacefully in his sleep.
Dick Everett was pleased to receive a birthday card from the class of 1940 on his 83 rd birthday. Although somewhat incapacitated, he is hopeful there will be many more birthdays.
Through Bill Pellington we have the Dartmouth 1940 banner that hung in Freshman Commons to hang at our 60th Reunion on June 12-14, 2000. Bill wrote, "I spoke for it early and whether I bought it or whether it was a gift, it represents the whole class and should be displayed at our 60th Reunion." We regret to learn that his wife, Jane, died June 19, 1999.
Gini and Tom Todd attended the New England Library Association meeting after the mini-reunion. Tom's company, Horn Books, and The Boston Globe honor the best in children's books for fiction, picture books and non-fiction books. Tom is head of Horn Books, having lived longer than anyone else.
Birtie and Joe Bird were going to join us for our mini-reunion but their children gave them an early 50th wedding anniversary of a four-day cruise on Disney Magic They managed to outrun Hurricane Floyd and had a great time. Then, on December 5, they celebrated their 50th anniversary at home with 110 guests, including family and a few remaining friends close by from their USAF days. Their children surprised them with a short video of highlights from their wedding to the present. Both Birtie and Joe play a lot of bridge. Joe manages "The Shoppe," a small exchange that stocks sundries, but does not miss mowing the lawn, raking leaves, etc.
Chet Berry on a safari in Kenya found out how small the world is. In the party was Cynthia Bassett, niece of classmate LeeBassett, an employee of adopted classmate Bob Berger and a friend of many '4os, including Scotty Rogers and Bob MacMillen. The class misses all of the departed classmates.
