As I write these notes this morning, I feel inspired and humbled by the efforts and work of the other chroniclers of the life and times of our class. During the past 23 years, Donald Goss has published an average of 12 newsletters per year averaging 12 pages per issue, containing in-depth stories of our classmates, news, information, encouragement and philosophical comment. Dave Halloran, after a stint as class secretary, has put together an eclectic Web page that is packed with information, opinions, creative writing and other items of interest to our classmates. Phil Parshley has written some excellent class notes for the DMS News, while Fred Carleton writes a column for Tuck. All of these have made it easy for our classmates to remain "in touch" with each other.
Marilyn and Paul Paganucci have once again inspired us with their generosity. They have just presented $1.2 million to Colby College in Waterville, Maine, for the purpose of establishing a professorial chair for the teaching of Italian culture and the Italian language. Paul, born and brought up in Waterville, has been on the board of trustees of Colby College since 1975. In addition to his many successes in business as former CEO of Grace and Cos. and founder of Ledyard Bank of Hanover, Paul has been vice president of Dartmouth, where he and Marilyn created a similar endowment for a similar chair.
From Allen Collins, another classmate who stays in touch, comes word of Bob Henderson Jr. '80, MALS '91, son of our Bob Henderson, who has been appointed headmaster of the prestigious Nobles Greenough School. He is only its 16th headmaster in 134 years of existence. Allen and Nancy's granddaughter Katelyn is enrolled at the Nobles School in the seventh grade.
David Godschalk has been appointed by the governor of North Carolina to serve on the state's Commission to Address Smart Growth Management and Development Issues, charged with reporting its recommendations to the state legislature by January 2001. David is a professor of city and regional planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Hundred Year Association has awarded Robert Douglass its 67th annual Gold Medal at a black-tie dinner at The Pierre in New York City on November 11, 1999. Bob is the chairman of the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Association. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to New York City, and has been presented annually since 1930 except for the World War II years. Bob was a trustee of Dartmouth from 1983-1993.
I had reported a couple of months ago that A1 Murphy had decided to become an arbitrator after a career in the practice of law. He has just been chosen as arbitrator of a high-profile case regarding a termination hearing for the police chief of Newton, Conn.
I must close with the unhappy report of Jim Penney's death from non-Hodgkins lymphoma. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife, Nancy, and daughters Erika, Pamela and Debora. Please help us keep in touch by sending me any news which you think might be of interest to our classmates.
