The President's Desk
"You can observe a lot by just watching," said Yankees catcher Yogi Berra. Visit President James Wright's office and you'll see those words displayed on his desk along with an eclectic collection of presidential memorabilia, including: 1. Baseballs autographed by Hall of Famers Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and Berra. 2. Door handle to Galena (Illinois) High School, where Wright was a member of the last class to graduate. 3. Powderman's knife, handmade from an old file, used to set explosives for the Eagle Picher Mining Co., Wright's employer in the early 19605. 4. Hunk of lead Wright found when he worked as a miner. 5. Figure of 1930s Hungarian school- boy. Jean Kemeny, widow of former Dartmouth President John Kemeny, presented it to Wright the day he became president. Kemeny's Jewish schoolmates had given it to him when he left Hungary in 1940. 6. Piece of the Berlin Wall Wright picked up near Checkpoint Charlie in 1990, the year after the wall came down.
