Tried to get an update from Tom Adams on the Alumni Fund but he's been busy on the phone, Id assume trying to pry out a few more bucks. By next post time I'll have full details for you.
I received notice that Joel Goldberg was recently given an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Oglethorpe University. He joins some rather select honorees including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bernard Baruch and Woodrow Wilson. Joel had a distinguished career with Rich's Inc. of Atlanta, rising to the position of CEO. His public and charitable accomplishments would fill the entire column. Also, it should be noted he is a trustee of Oglethorpe University—but please don't think that's why he was honored. Congrats, Joel. You came a long way from Worcester, Massachusetts.
Bob Winstanley recently lectured in New Canaan, Connecticut, on aviation safety from a pilots perspective. Bob is long retired, having ing started with NCR and later on becoming a bank president. Don't know how he got into flying, was a combat infantryman in WW 11, though "retired" he has a venture that finances aircraft. Jack Witte was kind enough to drop me a note. Said he'd;been on a Mediterranean cruise and before that a visit to Salzburg on a Sound ofMusic trip.
Jim von Rohr has scheduled a big meeting for the committee at Class Officers Weekend in mid-September. Some sad news to report, Don Furber passed away June 4. Don had been ailing for quite awhile but wife Margaret told me he just couldn't make it. Don had been our treasurer for many years and a member of the executive committee. We extend our deep sympathy to Margaret and his family
I must report some more disturbing news. Just two weeks ago I learned that our present treasurer, Andy Gruninger, was seriously ill. I have spoken to his wife, Win. Andy's now in a nursing home. We all wish a recovery for him. President Buol Hinman asked me to take over the duties of treasurer. I hope by the mini-reunion someone will step forward and volunteer to take over. No prior experience necessary. In the meantime I'll do my best to keep us out of Chapter 11. On a personal note, and excuse my bragging, I'm off this week to Little Creek, Virginia, ginia, where my son George, a Navy commander in the Seals, will assume command of Navy Seal Team 8. I know all you Navy guys will appreciate that. I'm just a little proud, so forgive my personal note. Hope you enjoy the summer.
