Praises to the class of '59 and their participation in the Alumni Fund. We raised $159,581, up 41 percent from last year, and that includes an 80-percent increase in leadership giving, with 19 of us becoming members of the 1769 society.
Classmates Bob Helsell, Bob King, and Tim Rich recently attended an award luncheon for Bob Cline. Bob is CEO of Airborne Express and received the Pennington Award from Children's Hospital in Seatdean award for dedication and leadership which began when Bob's youngest daughter was born prematurely and the hospital played a key role in sustaining her young life. In 1960 Bob began his career with"The Chase" in New York. He joined Pacific Air Freight in 1965 as VP of finance. In 1968 Pacific merged with Airborne, and in 1984 Bob was named chairman and CEO of Airborne. He serves on several corporate boards, including Ranier Ice and Cold Storage Inc., Safeco Corporation, and N.C. Machinery. He is involved in the arts, is a board member of the United Way of King County, and was chairman of its 1992 campaign. Bob has four daughters and lives in Seattle with his wife, Judy.
John Towle informed me that he ran into Bob Berg in Mexico City. Bob has his own market research company there, and he and his wife, Maru, are recent grandparents. John states that Bob Kilgore, who works for Florida Sportsman magazine in Miami, was up in Hendersonville, N.C., doing a little trout fishing in the Pisgah National Park. A bit of editorializing: Florida Sportsman is a great magazine, and I look forward to it every month.
David Reber sent a thought-provoking letter. He states, "I don't believe everything I read, but some things are obvious—the College is sure trying to discredit the Review and its position at every opportunity. 'Methinks the lady doth protest too much.' It's tough enough for us 'dinosaurs' to adjust to gay rights, AIDS, and political correctness without the inane na-na-ne-na-na 'political war' being waged at our college. Please stop before more of us retreat into our memories of the College, happy in our exile."
On a musical note, Robert Edgerton, Ph.D., professor of music and director of choral activities at Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S.C., has had his choral arrangements of "America" and "The Star Spangled Banner" published by Shawnee Press. Congratulations.
Our famous classmate David Gavitt, acting in one of his many roles, was noted in the Wall Street Journal for settling the Olympic Logo squabble concerning the U.S.A. "Dream Team." Michael Jordan, a Nike endorser, and others were refusing to attend the Olympic closing ceremony dressed in Reebok warmup suits. Dave suggested that team members be allowed to cover the Reebok logo by unzipping the jacket collar (Dartmouth savvy).
Best regards.
